Understanding how to reduce plastic use and managing waste across a national or multi-site business presents operational challenges when balancing commercial efficiency with environmental targets. This month brings the global Plastic Free July campaign which provides you with an opportunity to audit plastic use and set in place plans to implement extendable, sustainable improvements.

For large-scale organisations, reducing plastic use is not just a branding exercise. It is an operational decision to reduce procurement and disposal costs while protecting your business against regulatory risk. This article helps you understand how to reduce plastic use across multiple sites.

Plastic Free July overview

Plastic Free July is an international movement focused on collectively reducing plastic use through everyday changes. While individual actions are valuable, the collective impact of corporate estates standardising waste reduction can keep thousands of tonnes of material out of landfills and ecosystems. The campaign presents an opportunity for businesses to assess how to reduce plastic use to improve sustainability and reduce operating costs.

For enterprises, deploying frameworks to reduce plastic usage helps reduce plastic use, transition away from single-use items and reduce procurement costs, delivery frequencies and administrative burdens. Changes businesses make today will provide long-term cost benefits and help ensure compliance for upcoming regulatory change in 2027.

For Plastic Free July, we’ll be hosting upcoming Plastics Workshop webinar on Friday 17 July at 12:30pm, for more details, click here.

The state of plastic pollution in 2026

Evaluating the global scale of plastic waste highlights why reduction is critical for modern multi-site operations:

Fossil fuel reliance: More than 99% of plastics are derived from chemicals sourced directly from fossil fuels*1.

Global production is escalating: Worldwide manufacturing exceeds 400 million tonnes of plastic each year, a figure projected to nearly triple by the year 2060 if current consumption patterns remain unchecked*2.

Low plastic recycling history: Globally, only 9% of all plastic ever produced has been successfully recycled, with the remaining volume destined for incineration, landfill, or environmental contamination*3.

High carbon emissions speeding up climate change: Every single tonne of plastic generated releases more than 2.5 tonnes of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere during production*4.

Here today, here tomorrow: Plastic waste requires between 20 and 500 years to break down. Instead of truly degrading, it fractures into microplastics that compromise ecosystems, soil health, and water systems*5.

For multi-site operators, these figures underscore the importance of shifting corporate policy away from waste management and toward total waste prevention.

What can businesses do to make a difference?

Achieving meaningful sustainability across a complex property portfolio does not require immediate, disruptive operational overhauls. Instead, maximum impact comes from implementing structured, extendable frameworks that systematically phase out high-volume plastic items. Learning how to reduce plastic use not only helps the environment by cutting plastic demand, but it has tangible benefits to operating costs, such as a reduction in disposal and long-term procurement costs.

Preparing your supply chains for a low-waste economy is also a matter of regulatory resilience. Under the upcoming UK Simpler Recycling updates, flexible plastics will become a mandatory separate waste stream for all commercial locations starting from 31 March 2027. Rolling out consistent recycling protocols across your locations today prevents costly, last-minute compliance struggles tomorrow, establishing a uniform operational standard across your entire estate.

The Multi-Site Guide. Six steps to reduce plastic use

Implementing an estate-wide strategy requires clear, repeatable procedures. This six-step plastic reduction guide is designed to help procurement teams and facilities managers understand how to reduce plastic use and deploy plastic reduction initiatives across all geographical locations.

1. Audit your estate-wide hotspots

In order to make change, you need to establish an accurate baseline of your waste profile. Multi-site businesses should review facilities across their network to identify where plastic waste accumulates.

Key focus areas typically include staff catering facilities, break rooms, meeting spaces, central distribution docks, and facilities management storage. Partnering with a Total Waste Management provider can help centralise this data, identifying whether waste anomalies are estate-wide or isolated to regional facilities.

2. Standardise beverage procurement

Single-use plastic bottles and cups represent a major percentage of front-of-house waste. Facilities managers can eliminate these items by introducing centralised water filtration stations and providing employees with reusable alternatives. For boardrooms, corporate hospitality, and external client meetings, update your procurement directory to mandate glass or infinitely recyclable aluminium alternatives, ensuring a consistent brand experience across all offices.

3. Restructure catering and supply chains

Shared kitchens and corporate dining facilities are prime sources of high-volume plastic waste. Supply chain managers should update service level agreements to swap out single-use plates and plastic cutlery for permanent ceramic and stainless-steel options. Work closely with your logistics partners to cut down on transit packaging, transition away from individually portioned condiments, and source bulk items rather than individually wrapped goods.

4. Drive consistency in recycling protocols

When plastic use cannot be entirely avoided, ensure it enters a reliable recycling stream. Consistency across multiple sites is an effective way to lower contamination rates. By implementing identical, colour-coded waste stations and uniform signage across every floor of every facility, you remove regional ambiguity. This clear structure helps staff maintain correct recycling habits when moving between different corporate locations, significantly improving material purity and lowering estate-wide disposal fees.

5. Coordinate regional sustainability networks

An effective sustainability strategy requires local support. Establish a network of regional sustainability champions across your sites to oversee the rollout of your reduction policies. Central management can support these teams by launching coordinated internal communication campaigns, establishing inter-site sustainability leaderboards, and introducing unified team pledges to keep momentum high across all branches.

6. Embed the waste hierarchy into procurement

When assessing new suppliers or renewing service agreements, procurement teams should actively apply the core principles of the waste hierarchy. Prioritise systems that favour refilling over replacing, choose reuse options over disposable items, and always seek to reduce your total material demands before relying on recycling.

The UK Government has announced a major step forward in climate and sustainability education, following recommendations from the Curriculum and Assessment Review. Led by Professor Becky Francis, CEO of the Education Endowment Foundation, the review identified gaps in how scientific principles behind climate change and the impact of human behaviour on the environment are currently taught.

In response, the government has committed to reforming the curriculum across both primary and secondary schools. A key focus will be revising the design and technology curriculum, as well as GCSE subject content, to embed sustainability concepts more deeply.

This move has been welcomed by the Chartered Institution of Wastes Management (CIWM), which described the plans as “real progress” towards integrating sustainability and circular economy principles into mainstream education. CIWM highlighted the opportunity to equip young people with the mindset and skills needed for careers in the green and resource management sectors.
However, CIWM also emphasised the importance of involving industry experts in the next phase of curriculum development to ensure the content aligns with future workforce needs. They stressed that adequate resources, teacher training, and clear pathways for 16–19 education will be essential to delivering these ambitions effectively.

Dr Adam Read MBE, Chief Sustainability and External Affairs Officer at SUEZ UK, added:
“Understanding sustainability, resource management, and the environmental challenges our children will face is no longer optional; it’s a fundamental life skill for the next generation of consumers, innovators, and employees. These reforms will help schools move beyond simply teaching about the climate emergency—they’ll prepare students to be part of the solution and introduce them to the careers that will drive the UK’s net zero transition.”

The UK government has unveiled ambitious plans to supercharge the clean energy sector, aiming to create 400,000 new jobs by 2030. With employment in renewable, wind, solar, and nuclear energy expected to nearly double to 860,000 within five years, this marks a major shift in the national workforce — and a huge opportunity for those considering a career in sustainability.

Plumbers, electricians, welders, and other skilled trades are among 31 priority occupations identified as “particularly in demand.” To support this growth, five new “technical excellence colleges” will be launched, alongside tailored training schemes for veterans, ex-offenders, school leavers, and the unemployed. Even workers from oil and gas industries will be supported with bespoke retraining programmes to help transition into clean energy roles.

Energy Secretary Ed Miliband described the initiative as essential to “get bills down for good” and highlighted booming hubs like the Siemens wind turbine factory in Hull and the upcoming Sizewell C nuclear power station in Suffolk, which alone will require 10,000 new jobs.

At Greenzone, we’re inspired by this momentum. While we don’t currently have any open vacancies, we believe the future of work lies in purpose-driven industries — and clean energy is at the heart of that transformation.

If you’re passionate about sustainability, innovation, and making a real impact, we’d love to hear from you. We welcome speculative applications from individuals who want to be part of the green transition and help shape a better future.

Today is National E-Waste Day and First Mile is proud to share its dedication to making sustainable WEEE recycling and reuse the new normal for businesses across the UK.

The scale of the UK’s WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) problem is significant. According to data from Material Focus, total WEEE collections in the UK reached 496,000 tonnes in 2024, up only marginally from 493,000 tonnes in 2018 despite underlying growth in electronics placed on the market.

Each year, First Mile collect around 24 tonnes of WEEE, ranging from laptops and smartphones to fridges and fluorescent lamps. Customers can easily book collections via the portal, choosing from tailored options such as the 25kg WEEE Sack, WEEE Sticker for bulky items, or 40L Tote Box for mixed electronics requiring secure data wiping and certification.

Once collected, items are categorised into one of 14 WEEE types and directed to appropriate end destinations:

Reuse: Around 10–15% of WEEE is refurbished and resold, primarily IT and telecom equipment. Devices are data-wiped, reinstalled with fresh operating systems, and listed on First Mile’s eBay shop, which boasts 99% positive feedback from over 1,000 satisfied customers.

Raw material recovery: 15–20% of items, such as cables, chargers, and unrepairable electronics are sent to a supply chain partner where materials are recovered and a rebate is paid per kilogram.

Disposal: The remaining 70% is responsibly disposed of via partners like SWEEEP and Recolight, using advanced AI-powered sorting systems and industry leading technologies to safely dismantle the many hazardous components.

Special handling is provided for items such as fridges and gas lamps, which require manual dismantling and strict environmental controls. First Miles partnership with the Environmental Agency ensures full compliance with the latest regulations and contributes to continuous improvement in service quality.

Since 2023, First Mile has successfully reused over 3.5 tonnes of WEEE, demonstrating its commitment to sustainability and innovation in the waste management sector.

Janice Lack, Marketing Manager at Greenzone, commented: “The mission is to make recycling easy, safe, and impactful. First Mile combine industry expertise, technology, compliance and customer service to help businesses reduce their environmental footprint.”

By facilitating streamlined collections for business and applying best practices in reuse, data wiping, material recovery and safe disposal the goal is to lessen the impact of the growth in electronics waste helping the UK progress toward a circular economy for WEEE waste.
Greenzone is thrilled to announce its participation in Recycle Week 2025, taking place from the 22nd to 28th September, as part of WRAP’s flagship Recycle Now campaign.

Imagine a plant so remarkable that it’s been shaping human life for over 4,000 years. From building homes and bridges to making musical instruments and even clothing, bamboo has been a constant companion in our journey — a symbol of resilience, prosperity, and harmony across cultures from China to India, Japan to Vietnam.

But bamboo’s story is more relevant than ever today, as we search for sustainable solutions to the plastic crisis.

The Fastest-Growing Green Giant

Bamboo is one of the fastest-growing plants on Earth. In the right conditions, some species can shoot up by an astonishing 91 cm (about 3 feet) in a single day! Most varieties are ready for harvest in just 3–7 years, compared to decades for trees.

With nearly 1,600 species worldwide, bamboo grows on every continent except Europe and Antarctica. Its robust root network not only prevents soil erosion but also thrives in polluted environments, helping to restore damaged land.

A Carbon-Capturing Powerhouse

Bamboo is a champion at fighting climate change. A single hectare (about 2.5 acres) of Bambusa tulda bamboo can absorb around 17,000 kilograms of CO₂ per year — enough to offset the annual emissions of three to four average passenger cars.Unlike trees, when bamboo is harvested, its roots stay alive and keep storing carbon, while new shoots quickly regenerate without replanting.

Bamboo vs. Plastic: A Sustainable Swap

Plastic pollution is overwhelming our planet, with millions of tonnes entering our oceans and landfills every year. Single-use plastics — straws, cutlery, cups, and packaging — are among the hardest to recycle and most damaging to the environment. Bamboo offers a natural, renewable alternative. It can replace many single-use plastics, is biodegradable, and requires far less energy and resources to produce than traditional materials. Bamboo products are strong, lightweight, and can be harvested every few years without harming the plant or the planet.

The Numbers Tell the Story

Bamboo can grow up to 91 cm (3 feet) per day in optimal conditions

A hectare of bamboo absorbs 17,000 kg of CO₂ per year — offsetting emissions from 3–4 cars

Bamboo produces 35% more oxygen than trees on a pound-for-pound basis

It can be harvested every 3–5 years, compared to 30+ years for timber

Bamboo yields up to 20 times more timber per hectare than trees

Naturally pest-resistant, bamboo doesn’t need chemical pesticides and helps prevent soil erosion

A Future Rooted in Sustainability

Bamboo’s story is one of hope and innovation. As we look for ways to reduce plastic waste and restore our planet, bamboo stands tall — a symbol of what’s possible when we work with nature, not against it.

The world of waste management is changing fast. Across the UK, new policies and regulations are reshaping how businesses deal with recycling and sustainability.

For Greenzone, a specialist in Total Waste Management, this shift isn’t just a challenge it’s a chance to double down on sustainability, compliance, and innovation.

What’s changing in waste & recycling?

Simpler Recycling in England
From the 31st of March this year, businesses with 10 or more employees must separate key recyclables including glass, metal, paper, card, plastic, and food waste. Smaller businesses have a little longer (until March 2027). The aim? To bring consistency across sectors and boost recycling rates, which have stalled at around 44–45%.

Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR)
Starting from October, new levies will mean retailers and online marketplaces must take financial responsibility for the packaging they put on the market. In short businesses will help pay for the end-of-life costs of packaging.

Scotland’s Circular Economy Act
Scotland is going further with its 2024 Circular Economy Act, which introduces fines for households that put banned items in recycling bins – things like disposable coffee cups and vapes.

How Greenzone is helping businesses stay ahead

Flexible waste contracts: With coverage across England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland, Greenzone makes compliance easier with consolidated waste services (DMR, food, glass, WEEE, and more).

Smart tech & insights: Our IT and AI-driven tools give businesses real-time data on waste generation – crucial when documentation and tracking are now part of the compliance process.

Proven sustainability: In 2023, Greenzone recycled over 97% of the waste we handled, collecting 58,000 tonnes. Supporting progress towards a circular economy well ahead of incoming rules.

The challenges and opportunities

Rising costs vs compliance pressure
EPR fees, new fines, and potential incineration charges could hit margins, especially for smaller firms. But for Greenzone, this is an opportunity to offer added value through compliance services, audits, and consultancy.

Customer education & engagement
With new bans on mis-sorted items like ceramics, tissues, and cookware, Greenzone is stepping up with signage, audits, and personalised training to help businesses stay compliant and keep recycling rates high.

Infrastructure needs
More food waste collections, better sorting, and new recycling capacity (like plastic film) will be essential. Greenzone’s scale and partnerships make it well placed to bridge these gaps for clients.

Greenzone’s Marketing Manager, Janice Lack said: “These new rules aren’t just about ticking compliance boxes they’re a chance for businesses to rethink waste and put sustainability at the heart of their operations. We’re helping customers stay ahead with smart data, flexible solutions, and the confidence that they’re not just meeting regulations but making a real impact.”

The UK is entering a new chapter in waste management – one built on accountability, consistency, and financial responsibility. For Greenzone, these shifts don’t just reinforce the value of our Total Waste Management approach; they show why businesses need a partner who can simplify compliance, drive sustainability, and keep them prepared for what’s next.
