Across UK waste and environmental compliance, a pattern is emerging. Paper forms and manual record keeping are being replaced by mandatory digital reporting, and it is happening in several pieces of legislation at once, not just one. Digital Waste Tracking is the clearest example of this shift, but Extended Producer Responsibility for packaging and Simpler Recycling are both part of the same direction of travel, each in its own way.

For any business that generates, handles or is responsible for waste, understanding how these three pieces of legislation fit together can simplify the processes you put in place to ensure compliance across different authorities.

What is Digital Waste Tracking, and why is it being introduced?

Digital Waste Tracking is a new government service designed to create a single, unbroken digital record of waste, from the point it is produced through to its final disposal or recovery. It is being introduced to replace the current fragmented, paper based system. Waste Transfer Notes and hazardous waste consignment notes are being replaced with one digital record that regulators can access directly. Over time, the same approach is expected to extend to the paperwork used for Green List waste exports, currently known as Annex VII forms, bringing that information into the same system.

The case for change is straightforward. Paper records are slow, easy to lose and hard to verify, which makes it difficult for regulators to build an accurate picture of where waste actually goes. Waste crime linked to this gap is estimated to cost the UK economy around £1 billion a year. Digital Waste Tracking, introduced under Section 58 of the Environment Act 2021, is intended to close that gap by giving regulators reliable, near real time data, while also speeding up reporting for legitimate operators.

The Digital Waste Tracking timeline

Digital Waste Tracking is being rolled out in phases.

Phase 1 – Waste Receivers

Mandatory for operators of permitted or licensed waste receiving sites from 1 October 2026 in England and Wales, with Scotland and Northern Ireland following from January 2027.

Phase 2 – Carriers, Brokers & Dealers

A second phase then extends the requirement to waste carriers, brokers and dealers from October 2027.

Waste Producers

Waste producers are not yet directly in scope of Digital Waste Tracking. That does not mean producers can treat this as somebody else’s problem. Every business already has a legal duty of care for the waste it produces, which includes taking reasonable steps to check that the carriers, brokers and sites it uses are properly authorised and compliant. As the sector around a producer becomes digital, meeting that duty of care should get easier, but the underlying responsibility itself does not change.

How Extended Producer Responsibility fits in

Extended Producer Responsibility, or EPR, for packaging is a different piece of legislation entirely, but it follows the same underlying pattern. Producers of packaging report their data through the Report Packaging Data service, described by the Environment Agency as the digital service for EPR. Large producers submit data twice a year, small producers submit once a year, and that data feeds directly into how packaging waste is funded and managed.

Digital Waste Tracking and EPR sit under different rules, cover different obligations and are administered by different teams. But the principles behind them are similar. Paper based reporting is being replaced by mandatory digital submission, and businesses that get comfortable with digital compliance now are the ones that will find each new requirement easier to implement as it arrives.

Where Simpler Recycling fits in

Simpler Recycling is a slightly different case. Unlike Digital Waste Tracking and EPR, Simpler Recycling is not itself a digital reporting system. At its core, it is a physical requirement. Businesses with 10 or more full time equivalent employees have had to separate dry mixed recycling (glass, metal, paper, card and plastic) and food waste from general waste since 31 March 2025, with micro-firms required to do the same by 31 March 2027. Flexible plastics will also need to be separately processed by 31 March 2027 too.

So why does it belong in this article? Because demonstrating and evidencing that separation is actually happening depends on the same kind of digital record keeping that Digital Waste Tracking introduces. As waste movements become digitally logged as standard practice, proving Simpler Recycling compliance stops being a standalone exercise and becomes part of the same connected record. The requirement itself stays physical. The evidence trail behind it is converging with everything else.

Three systems, one shift

Put the three together and the pattern is clear. Digital Waste Tracking, EPR and Simpler Recycling are three different pieces of legislation, overseen by different systems and regulators, but all pushing businesses away from paper, and towards connected digital record keeping.

For a business, the practical implication is that record keeping and reporting are best treated as one connected system, not three separate boxes to tick. A business that builds its waste data processes around this broader shift, rather than reacting to each requirement in isolation, is likely to find compliance considerably more straightforward as further phases and further regulations arrive.

Getting ready for what comes next

None of these changes need to be overwhelming, particularly if preparation starts well before each deadline rather than after it. Greenzone works with businesses across the UK to make sense of what digital compliance actually requires in practice, from Digital Waste Tracking through to Simpler Recycling and EPR obligations. If you would like to talk through what these changes mean for your business, get in touch with our team to find out how to prepare.

Every year, people across England, Scotland and Northern Ireland buy an estimated 25 billion drinks in single use containers, plastic bottles, steel cans and aluminium cans among them. Of those, around 6.5 billion are never recycled. That works out at more than 17 million containers wasted every single day.

Those numbers show up on the ground in a familiar way. Drinks bottles and cans are consistently among the most common items found in England’s litter surveys, and, according to Keep Britain Tidy’s research, when the public is asked which type of litter bothers them most, drinks related packaging tops the list.

This is not a new problem. Households across the UK have had access to kerbside recycling collections for decades. Yet recycling figures have barely moved. That gap between effort and outcome is what the Deposit Return Scheme (DRS), due to launch across England, Scotland and Northern Ireland on 1 October 2027, is designed to close.

Why kerbside recycling has not been enough

England’s household recycling rate has sat at about 44 to 45 percent for a decade. Government figures describe the rate as having flatlined since 2015, well below the 50 percent target originally set for 2020. Two issues sit behind that plateau.

The first is inconsistency. Different councils have historically collected different materials in different ways, so an item accepted for recycling in one area could be rejected as contamination in the next. The Government has described this as a postcode lottery, and closing it is the specific aim of the separate Simpler Recycling reforms now being rolled out alongside DRS.

The second is contamination itself. Recent research from WRAP found that 81 percent of people put at least one item in their recycling that their council does not accept locally. Too much contaminated waste material can prevent a whole lorry load of material from being recycled.

Kerbside collection was also never well suited to drinks consumed away from home. A can finished at a bus stop or a bottle emptied in a park rarely makes it back to a household bin. It becomes litter instead, which is one reason Keep Britain Tidy estimates that around 16 million plastic bottles fail to enter the recycling system in England every single day.

What a deposit actually changes

A deposit return scheme works on a simple piece of behavioural logic. Right now, an empty bottle or can has no value. Once the drink is finished, it becomes rubbish, something to be disposed of.

A refundable deposit changes that arithmetic. Exchange for Change, the organisation appointed to run the scheme, will introduce a flat deposit of 20p per in-scope container. The moment that charge is added, the container stops being rubbish and becomes something with a price attached to it. It is similar to the glass bottle return scheme that peaked from the 1950s to the 1970s, only applied consistently, at national scale, and backed by dedicated collection infrastructure rather than habit or goodwill. Recycling stops depending on someone remembering to use the right bin. It becomes something people actively choose to do, because there is now a reason to.

What the evidence from outside the UK shows

The clearest test case for how well this works in practice is Ireland’s Re-turn scheme, which launched in February 2024. Before the scheme began, Ireland recycled roughly 49 percent of in-scope plastic bottles and cans. According to Re-turn’s own reporting, that figure had risen to an estimated 91 percent within about a year and a half of operation, with 76 percent of containers captured directly through the scheme itself.

The impact on litter has followed a similar pattern. Re-turn reports that container litter has fallen by more than half since launch, contributing to the cleanest Irish beaches recorded in 25 years.

Reloop, which works with governments, industry and society to accelerate the global transition to a circular economy, reports that 18 mature deposit return schemes across Europe have a median collection rate of 90 percent, with over half of the countries achieving recycling rates of 90 percent or higher.

European examples are not a perfect comparison. Deposit levels, existing infrastructure and consumer habits all differ from the UK’s. But behavioural shifts of that scale, in such a short timeframe, are difficult to dismiss.

Part of a wider shift

Litter reduction is the most visible argument for a deposit scheme, but it sits inside a larger policy direction. Alongside DRS, the UK is introducing Simpler Recycling and extended producer responsibility for packaging reforms, both aimed at keeping materials in circulation rather than losing them to landfill or incineration after a single use. The Government has been explicit that these reforms together are intended to support the move towards a more circular economy.

A drinks container returned through a deposit scheme tends to produce cleaner, higher value material than one sorted from general household waste, because it has not been mixed with other rubbish along the way. That matters, because material of that quality can go back into new packaging rather than being downcycled or lost from the system entirely. It is the same principle behind most of the circular economy work Greenzone supports clients with day to day, keeping materials useful for as long as possible, rather than treating them as waste the moment they are finished with.

A lot to take in at once

None of this is landing in isolation. Many businesses are already working through Simpler Recycling and extended producer responsibility for packaging, and a Deposit Return Scheme is now arriving in the same fairly tight window. It is entirely reasonable to feel that it is a lot to keep track of at once.

Understanding why DRS exists, and why the evidence so far suggests it will work, is a useful starting point. Working out exactly what it means for your business is a separate conversation, and one we are always happy to have. Speak to the Greenzone team if you would like any further assistance with it.

Understanding how to reduce plastic use and managing waste across a national or multi-site business presents operational challenges when balancing commercial efficiency with environmental targets. This month brings the global Plastic Free July campaign which provides you with an opportunity to audit plastic use and set in place plans to implement extendable, sustainable improvements.

For large-scale organisations, reducing plastic use is not just a branding exercise. It is an operational decision to reduce procurement and disposal costs while protecting your business against regulatory risk. This article helps you understand how to reduce plastic use across multiple sites.

Plastic Free July overview

Plastic Free July is an international movement focused on collectively reducing plastic use through everyday changes. While individual actions are valuable, the collective impact of corporate estates standardising waste reduction can keep thousands of tonnes of material out of landfills and ecosystems. The campaign presents an opportunity for businesses to assess how to reduce plastic use to improve sustainability and reduce operating costs.

For enterprises, deploying frameworks to reduce plastic usage helps reduce plastic use, transition away from single-use items and reduce procurement costs, delivery frequencies and administrative burdens. Changes businesses make today will provide long-term cost benefits and help ensure compliance for upcoming regulatory change in 2027.

For Plastic Free July, we’ll be hosting upcoming Plastics Workshop webinar on Friday 17 July at 12:30pm, for more details, click here.

The state of plastic pollution in 2026

Evaluating the global scale of plastic waste highlights why reduction is critical for modern multi-site operations:

Fossil fuel reliance: More than 99% of plastics are derived from chemicals sourced directly from fossil fuels*1.

Global production is escalating: Worldwide manufacturing exceeds 400 million tonnes of plastic each year, a figure projected to nearly triple by the year 2060 if current consumption patterns remain unchecked*2.

Low plastic recycling history: Globally, only 9% of all plastic ever produced has been successfully recycled, with the remaining volume destined for incineration, landfill, or environmental contamination*3.

High carbon emissions speeding up climate change: Every single tonne of plastic generated releases more than 2.5 tonnes of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere during production*4.

Here today, here tomorrow: Plastic waste requires between 20 and 500 years to break down. Instead of truly degrading, it fractures into microplastics that compromise ecosystems, soil health, and water systems*5.

For multi-site operators, these figures underscore the importance of shifting corporate policy away from waste management and toward total waste prevention.

What can businesses do to make a difference?

Achieving meaningful sustainability across a complex property portfolio does not require immediate, disruptive operational overhauls. Instead, maximum impact comes from implementing structured, extendable frameworks that systematically phase out high-volume plastic items. Learning how to reduce plastic use not only helps the environment by cutting plastic demand, but it has tangible benefits to operating costs, such as a reduction in disposal and long-term procurement costs.

Preparing your supply chains for a low-waste economy is also a matter of regulatory resilience. Under the upcoming UK Simpler Recycling updates, flexible plastics will become a mandatory separate waste stream for all commercial locations starting from 31 March 2027. Rolling out consistent recycling protocols across your locations today prevents costly, last-minute compliance struggles tomorrow, establishing a uniform operational standard across your entire estate.

The Multi-Site Guide. Six steps to reduce plastic use

Implementing an estate-wide strategy requires clear, repeatable procedures. This six-step plastic reduction guide is designed to help procurement teams and facilities managers understand how to reduce plastic use and deploy plastic reduction initiatives across all geographical locations.

1. Audit your estate-wide hotspots

In order to make change, you need to establish an accurate baseline of your waste profile. Multi-site businesses should review facilities across their network to identify where plastic waste accumulates.

Key focus areas typically include staff catering facilities, break rooms, meeting spaces, central distribution docks, and facilities management storage. Partnering with a Total Waste Management provider can help centralise this data, identifying whether waste anomalies are estate-wide or isolated to regional facilities.

2. Standardise beverage procurement

Single-use plastic bottles and cups represent a major percentage of front-of-house waste. Facilities managers can eliminate these items by introducing centralised water filtration stations and providing employees with reusable alternatives. For boardrooms, corporate hospitality, and external client meetings, update your procurement directory to mandate glass or infinitely recyclable aluminium alternatives, ensuring a consistent brand experience across all offices.

3. Restructure catering and supply chains

Shared kitchens and corporate dining facilities are prime sources of high-volume plastic waste. Supply chain managers should update service level agreements to swap out single-use plates and plastic cutlery for permanent ceramic and stainless-steel options. Work closely with your logistics partners to cut down on transit packaging, transition away from individually portioned condiments, and source bulk items rather than individually wrapped goods.

4. Drive consistency in recycling protocols

When plastic use cannot be entirely avoided, ensure it enters a reliable recycling stream. Consistency across multiple sites is an effective way to lower contamination rates. By implementing identical, colour-coded waste stations and uniform signage across every floor of every facility, you remove regional ambiguity. This clear structure helps staff maintain correct recycling habits when moving between different corporate locations, significantly improving material purity and lowering estate-wide disposal fees.

5. Coordinate regional sustainability networks

An effective sustainability strategy requires local support. Establish a network of regional sustainability champions across your sites to oversee the rollout of your reduction policies. Central management can support these teams by launching coordinated internal communication campaigns, establishing inter-site sustainability leaderboards, and introducing unified team pledges to keep momentum high across all branches.

6. Embed the waste hierarchy into procurement

When assessing new suppliers or renewing service agreements, procurement teams should actively apply the core principles of the waste hierarchy. Prioritise systems that favour refilling over replacing, choose reuse options over disposable items, and always seek to reduce your total material demands before relying on recycling.

The UK Government’s Environment Act 2021 is bringing in a series of reforms to the way waste is handled, and one of the key elements businesses need to be aware of is Simpler Recycling. This new approach aims to make recycling easier for businesses, reduce landfill waste, and contribute to a more sustainable, circular economy.

The government has introduced new regulations under the Environment Act 2021 and amendments to the Environmental Protection Act 1990, which will impact your business operations. It’s essential to understand these changes and take action to remain compliant.

What is Simpler Recycling?

The Simpler Recycling initiative is designed to simplify waste management for businesses by ensuring recyclable materials are properly sorted before collection. By complying with these new standards, your business will contribute to a more efficient recycling process.

The key recyclable materials, referred to as Recyclable Waste Streams (RWS), must be separated as follows:

Paper and Cardboard: Office paper, magazines, newspapers, and cardboard packaging.

Plastics: Empty plastic bottles, clean food containers, and packaging materials.

Glass: Glass bottles, jars, wine bottles, and sauce jars.

Metals: Empty aluminium cans, tins, and foil trays.

Food Waste: Leftover food, vegetable peelings, tea bags, and coffee grounds.

Effective sorting of these materials ensures they are recycled correctly, helping your business stay compliant and contribute to environmental sustainability.

What Does This Mean for Your Business?

By 31 March 2025, businesses must separate recyclable waste into specific categories. Greenzone is committed to helping you navigate this process smoothly and ensure full compliance with the new regulations. If your business employs fewer than 10 people, you are classified as a micro firm and are exempt from these requirements until March 2027.

Key Details of the New Simpler Recycling Regulations

Deadline: Businesses must start segregating recyclable waste streams by 31 March 2025.

Action Required: Review your waste management systems and ensure you have processes in place for proper segregation.

Government Guidance: For full details, you can view the official government guidance on Simpler Recycling in England: policy update – GOV.UK.

Advice and Support

To support your compliance, please begin reviewing your waste management processes:

Identify Recyclable Waste Streams (RWS): Understand the types of recyclable materials generated at your sites and estimate the quantities.

Internal Waste Segregation: Ensure that you have proper bins and systems in place for segregating recyclable materials at the point of generation.

Co-mingling Considerations: Some Recyclable Waste Streams, such as paper and cardboard or plastics and metals, can be co-mingled together. However, food waste must be separated from other Recyclable Waste Streams. General waste must always remain separate from all Recyclable Waste Streams.

By addressing these steps, you’ll ensure your waste management systems align with the new requirements, and Greenzone will be ready to support you with tailored solutions.

Led by Professor Becky Francis, CEO of the Education Endowment Foundation, the review identified gaps in how scientific principles behind climate change and the impact of human behaviour on the environment are currently taught.

In response, the government has committed to reforming the curriculum across both primary and secondary schools. A key focus will be revising the design and technology curriculum, as well as GCSE subject content, to embed sustainability concepts more deeply.

This move has been welcomed by the Chartered Institution of Wastes Management (CIWM), which described the plans as “real progress” towards integrating sustainability and circular economy principles into mainstream education. CIWM highlighted the opportunity to equip young people with the mindset and skills needed for careers in the green and resource management sectors.
However, CIWM also emphasised the importance of involving industry experts in the next phase of curriculum development to ensure the content aligns with future workforce needs. They stressed that adequate resources, teacher training, and clear pathways for 16–19 education will be essential to delivering these ambitions effectively.

Dr Adam Read MBE, Chief Sustainability and External Affairs Officer at SUEZ UK, added:
“Understanding sustainability, resource management, and the environmental challenges our children will face is no longer optional; it’s a fundamental life skill for the next generation of consumers, innovators, and employees. These reforms will help schools move beyond simply teaching about the climate emergency—they’ll prepare students to be part of the solution and introduce them to the careers that will drive the UK’s net zero transition.”

The UK government has unveiled ambitious plans to supercharge the clean energy sector, aiming to create 400,000 new jobs by 2030. With employment in renewable, wind, solar, and nuclear energy expected to nearly double to 860,000 within five years, this marks a major shift in the national workforce — and a huge opportunity for those considering a career in sustainability.

Plumbers, electricians, welders, and other skilled trades are among 31 priority occupations identified as “particularly in demand.” To support this growth, five new “technical excellence colleges” will be launched, alongside tailored training schemes for veterans, ex-offenders, school leavers, and the unemployed. Even workers from oil and gas industries will be supported with bespoke retraining programmes to help transition into clean energy roles.

Energy Secretary Ed Miliband described the initiative as essential to “get bills down for good” and highlighted booming hubs like the Siemens wind turbine factory in Hull and the upcoming Sizewell C nuclear power station in Suffolk, which alone will require 10,000 new jobs.

At Greenzone, we’re inspired by this momentum. While we don’t currently have any open vacancies, we believe the future of work lies in purpose-driven industries — and clean energy is at the heart of that transformation.

If you’re passionate about sustainability, innovation, and making a real impact, we’d love to hear from you. We welcome speculative applications from individuals who want to be part of the green transition and help shape a better future.

👉 Explore our values and culture on our carees page 📩 Send us your CV speculatively — we’re always open to connecting with future talent.

The clean energy revolution is here. Whether you’re just starting out or looking to pivot your career, now’s the time to get involved.

The scale of the UK’s WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) problem is significant. According to data from Material Focus, total WEEE collections in the UK reached 496,000 tonnes in 2024, up only marginally from 493,000 tonnes in 2018 despite underlying growth in electronics placed on the market.

Each year, First Mile collect around 24 tonnes of WEEE, ranging from laptops and smartphones to fridges and fluorescent lamps. Customers can easily book collections via the portal, choosing from tailored options such as the 25kg WEEE Sack, WEEE Sticker for bulky items, or 40L Tote Box for mixed electronics requiring secure data wiping and certification.

Reuse: Around 10–15% of WEEE is refurbished and resold, primarily IT and telecom equipment. Devices are data-wiped, reinstalled with fresh operating systems, and listed on First Mile’s eBay shop, which boasts 99% positive feedback from over 1,000 satisfied customers.

Raw material recovery: 15–20% of items, such as cables, chargers, and unrepairable electronics are sent to a supply chain partner where materials are recovered and a rebate is paid per kilogram.

Disposal: The remaining 70% is responsibly disposed of via partners like SWEEEP and Recolight, using advanced AI-powered sorting systems and industry leading technologies to safely dismantle the many hazardous components.

Special handling is provided for items such as fridges and gas lamps, which require manual dismantling and strict environmental controls. First Miles partnership with the Environmental Agency ensures full compliance with the latest regulations and contributes to continuous improvement in service quality.

Since 2023, First Mile has successfully reused over 3.5 tonnes of WEEE, demonstrating its commitment to sustainability and innovation in the waste management sector.

Janice Lack, Marketing Manager at Greenzone, commented: “The mission is to make recycling easy, safe, and impactful. First Mile combine industry expertise, technology, compliance and customer service to help businesses reduce their environmental footprint.”

By facilitating streamlined collections for business and applying best practices in reuse, data wiping, material recovery and safe disposal the goal is to lessen the impact of the growth in electronics waste helping the UK progress toward a circular economy for WEEE waste.
Imagine a plant so remarkable that it’s been shaping human life for over 4,000 years. From building homes and bridges to making musical instruments and even clothing, bamboo has been a constant companion in our journey — a symbol of resilience, prosperity, and harmony across cultures from China to India, Japan to Vietnam.

But bamboo’s story is more relevant than ever today, as we search for sustainable solutions to the plastic crisis.

The Fastest-Growing Green Giant

Bamboo is one of the fastest-growing plants on Earth. In the right conditions, some species can shoot up by an astonishing 91 cm (about 3 feet) in a single day! Most varieties are ready for harvest in just 3–7 years, compared to decades for trees.

With nearly 1,600 species worldwide, bamboo grows on every continent except Europe and Antarctica. Its robust root network not only prevents soil erosion but also thrives in polluted environments, helping to restore damaged land.

A Carbon-Capturing Powerhouse

Bamboo is a champion at fighting climate change. A single hectare (about 2.5 acres) of Bambusa tulda bamboo can absorb around 17,000 kilograms of CO₂ per year — enough to offset the annual emissions of three to four average passenger cars.Unlike trees, when bamboo is harvested, its roots stay alive and keep storing carbon, while new shoots quickly regenerate without replanting.

Bamboo vs. Plastic: A Sustainable Swap

Plastic pollution is overwhelming our planet, with millions of tonnes entering our oceans and landfills every year. Single-use plastics — straws, cutlery, cups, and packaging — are among the hardest to recycle and most damaging to the environment. Bamboo offers a natural, renewable alternative. It can replace many single-use plastics, is biodegradable, and requires far less energy and resources to produce than traditional materials. Bamboo products are strong, lightweight, and can be harvested every few years without harming the plant or the planet.

The Numbers Tell the Story

Bamboo can grow up to 91 cm (3 feet) per day in optimal conditions

A hectare of bamboo absorbs 17,000 kg of CO₂ per year — offsetting emissions from 3–4 cars

Bamboo produces 35% more oxygen than trees on a pound-for-pound basis

It can be harvested every 3–5 years, compared to 30+ years for timber

Bamboo yields up to 20 times more timber per hectare than trees

Naturally pest-resistant, bamboo doesn’t need chemical pesticides and helps prevent soil erosion

A Future Rooted in Sustainability

Bamboo’s story is one of hope and innovation. As we look for ways to reduce plastic waste and restore our planet, bamboo stands tall — a symbol of what’s possible when we work with nature, not against it.
