The UK Government has unveiled a brand-new Electric Car Grant scheme, offering drivers up to £3,750 off the cost of a new electric vehicle. This initiative marks a major step forward in making EVs more accessible, three years after the closure of the previous Plug-In Car Grant.
What’s on Offer?
The grant provides:
- Up to £3,750 for vehicles in the top sustainability band (Band 1)
- Up to £1,500 for Band 2 vehicles
To qualify, vehicles must meet the Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) mandate and be priced at £37,000 or less. The scheme is backed by a £650 million budget, distributed to manufacturers on a first-come, first-served basis.
How It Works
Buyers won’t need to fill out any forms—the discount is applied automatically at the point of sale, as long as the manufacturer has registered the vehicle under the scheme. Applications for manufacturers open on Wednesday, 16 July, and funding will be available until the 2028/29 financial year.
Why Now?
While EV adoption is growing—registrations rose nearly 26% year-on-year in May—uptake among private buyers has lagged behind fleet purchases. Industry leaders have warned that relying on manufacturers to absorb costs is no longer sustainable.
This new grant aims to bridge the affordability gap and encourage more drivers to make the switch.
“A generous grant like this gives a new group of buyers the push they need,” said Dan Caesar, CEO of Electric Vehicles UK. “With lower running costs and great tech, EVs are more appealing than ever.”
Charging Infrastructure on the Rise
Concerns about charging access? ChargeUK’s CEO Vicky Read reassures drivers that the infrastructure is keeping pace. With 82,000 public charge points and a new one installed every 29 minutes, the UK is investing heavily—£6 billion by 2030—to ensure charging is convenient and reliable.
