Technology Reuse Generates Up to £346 Million in Social Value

In the 2023/24 period, the resource and waste management sector has created up to £346 million in social value through technology reuse, according to a recent report by the Chartered Institution of Wastes Management (CIWM) and Tech-Takeback. This report highlights the significant impact of technology reuse on digital inclusion and broader reuse activities.

The findings reveal that technology reuse not only supports the UK’s transition to a circular economy but also contributes to the net zero goals. By providing high-quality reused items at affordable prices, the sector helps reduce household expenses, create new jobs in the repair and reuse economy, and cut carbon emissions by minimising the need for new product manufacturing.

Additionally, the reuse of electronics, such as laptops, plays a crucial role in reducing digital exclusion and aiding individuals in re-entering the workforce. The sector also enhances the recovery of rare earth metals from end-of-life products, further contributing to environmental sustainability.

Lee Marshall, CIWM’s Director of Innovation & Technical Services, emphasised the importance of strengthening waste policy to promote reuse activities. He stated, “By demonstrating the social value associated with reuse activities, we can hopefully accelerate the move toward them becoming more mainstream.”

The report also estimates that around 20 million unused laptops in UK homes could generate up to £44 billion in social value. It recommends using multiple tools to measure social value accurately, given the complexity of assessments.

Jodi Harford, Chief Operating Officer at Tech-Takeback, described reuse as a “powerful catalyst for community transformation,” underscoring its potential beyond just an alternative to recycling.
