From the 1st June, the UK is cracking down on disposable vapes. A new law will make it illegal for businesses to sell or supply single-use vapes across England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland.
Why the big move? It’s all part of a wider push to tackle the growing environmental problems that these throwaway products are causing.
They’ve become incredibly popular, especially among younger people due to being cheap, easy to use, brightly coloured, and often packed with sweet flavours. But here’s the catch most are used for just a few days and then thrown away and the result? A large amount of tricky waste. According to Material Focus, around five million disposable vapes are binned or littered every week in the UK, that’s about eight vapes every second. These devices contain valuable materials like lithium, copper, cobalt, and plastic – most of which never get recycled. In 2022 alone, over 40 tonnes of lithium were thrown away in single-use vapes – enough to power 5,000 electric cars.
Improperly discarded vapes are also causing serious safety concerns. The lithium-ion batteries inside them can spark fires if punctured, crushed, or exposed to heat – something that’s increasingly happening in bins, collection vehicles and at recycling centres. Waste industry workers across the UK have reported a sharp rise in fires linked to vape batteries, putting staff and infrastructure at risk. With millions of vapes thrown away each week, the potential for dangerous fires continues to grow.
If sent to landfill, these vapes can leak toxic substances like lead and mercury into soil and water, harming ecosystems and wildlife. Their plastic parts break down into microplastics that stick around in the environment for centuries – and can even end up in our food chain.
This ban isn’t just about cutting waste – it’s about protecting the planet. Here’s how it’s expected to help:
- Less Litter: Expect cleaner streets, beaches, and parks as vape-related waste drops off.
- Saving Resources: Precious materials like lithium and copper won’t be wasted – they can be reused instead.
- Protecting Wildlife: Fewer vapes in the wild means less risk to animals and ecosystems.
- Boosting Circular Economy: It’s a step toward a world where products are reused, not tossed after one use – helping us move closer to net-zero.
In a Nutshell…
The UK’s ban on single-use vapes is a big win for the environment. It tackles the waste, pollution, and risks these products bring – and encourages better habits for both consumers and businesses. Hopefully, it also inspires other countries to take similar action. While disposable vapes on the way out, there is a shift towards rechargeable ones – and these need to be disposed of responsibly too. Rechargeable vapes may only last 2-4 weeks, and they still contain batteries and electronic components, so they should never be thrown in general waste. Instead, Greenzone offer reliable, affordable vape collections. In addition to this, some vape retailers also offer take-back schemes, allowing you to return used devices for proper recycling. Safe disposal prevents fires, helps recover valuable materials and support closed loop recycling.
