With Phase 1 of mandatory Digital Waste Tracking coming into force on 1 October 2026, the transition for Greenzone customers has been seamless. We prepared for the changes well in advance, ensuring all regulatory requirements were handled behind the scenes without disrupting your daily operations.
Now that Phase 1 is live, attention is turning toward Phase 2. You may be wondering whether these upcoming regulations will demand extra effort from your team or if they fall outside your direct responsibilities.
What to expect from Phase 2
Phase 2 focuses on organisations that transport, arrange or deal with waste. Defra has outlined a clear path towards full implementation:
-
Autumn 2026
System testing begins with a private beta rollout.
-
Spring 2027
Testing expands to the wider industry through a public beta.
-
October 2027
Full digital tracking becomes mandatory across the UK.
Once Phase 2 is mandatory, around 300,000 waste carriers, brokers and dealers must log every transaction digitally. Information similar to a hazardous waste consignment note will be submitted directly to Defra using software or spreadsheets. This marks a major operational shift across the sector.
Zero extra admin for waste producers
If your business generates waste, the good news is that Phase 2 brings no new paperwork or admin burdens for you.
Legal compliance for Phase 2 sits squarely with waste brokers and carriers like Greenzone. Your day-to-day recycling processes will remain completely unchanged, with no need to submit extra records or learn new systems.
Replacing physical documents like Waste Transfer Notes with digital records gives the UK waste industry much-needed transparency. End-to-end digital tracking creates a clear picture of waste movement and leaves little room for untraceable disposal. This visibility leaves rogue operators with nowhere to hide, making it far harder to commit waste crimes like fly-tipping.
Why duty of care remains essential
Although Phase 2 does not add to your workload, maintaining a proper duty of care is still a key legal responsibility.
Businesses must ensure that their chosen waste management partner complies with all current and upcoming regulations. Working with a compliant partner guarantees that your waste is handled legally and protects local communities and ecosystems from illegal dumping.
At Greenzone, we are fully prepared for every stage of the new Digital Waste Tracking framework. As Phase 2 rolls out through its beta phases, you can rely on us to keep your waste management fully compliant, smooth and worry-free.
