Implementing an effective training and engagement campaign to improve recycling rates.

Overview

To support environmental performance, and achieve the MOD’s Waste Strategy Targets 2023, Greenzone were commissioned to implement a strategy to improve recycling across the estate.

The Chellenge

The MOD accounts for 50% of the UK Central Government’s annual Greenhouse Gas emissions, in addition to producing the largest amount of waste each year. The transient nature of the population and lack of standardised waste management programmes led to poor engagement with onsite recycling and best practice segregation. Office employees used under-desk bins, which were decanted into the external general waste containers, resulting in recyclates being disposed of via general waste and incinerated or landfilled, rather than recycled.
