The agency explained that the projects aim to address climate and environmental challenges in Ireland, including the circular economy

Among the key areas of research are the effects of noise pollution on both human health and the environment, young people’s perspectives and behaviours regarding climate change, and strategies to expand the circular economy more broadly.

Additionally, the projects aim to assess how rising sea levels might influence population trends and to study remote Irish islands to better understand how offshore ecosystems respond and adapt to climate change.

Dr Eimar Cotter, Director of the EPA’s Office of Evidence and Assessment, stated:
“The EPA’s increased research funding in 2025 highlights the essential role of science and innovation in tackling climate change, pollution, and biodiversity loss. This new investment will support the development of creative solutions to help Ireland meet these pressing challenges. Congratulations to the successful research teams—I look forward to seeing the outcomes of these important projects.”

In total, 11 projects will be carried out, involving 98 researchers and students from 27 different organisations.

With this latest €6.9 million allocation, the EPA has committed €21.4 million (around £18.26 million) to research funding so far this year. A full list of 2025 awardees is available on the EPA’s website.

The agency noted that its research programme is part of a Government of Ireland initiative, funded by the Department of Climate, Energy and the Environment.
