This ‘pre-cycle’ scheme will mean food is protected throughout the supply chain and plastics are effectively recycled.

The retailer has also promised to end the use of dark coloured plastics across its range by March 2020, plus remove all plastic packaging from Christmas crackers.

The announcement comes after Greenpeace research uncovered that the retailer had gained the most complaints about its use of plastics in 2018.

Greenpeace says Sainsbury’s received more than 4,700 Twitter complaints about plastic use, slightly more than Tesco which has nearly double the market share.

Last month, it visited the brand’s central London HQ to put a ‘Couldn’t Care Less’ banner beneath the flagship Sainsbury’s logo, a riff on the retailer’s ‘Live Well for Less’ tagline.

Mike Coupe, Sainsbury’s CEO, said: For many years, Sainsbury’s has prioritised sustainability and sought innovative solutions to reduce plastic packaging and increase recycling.

“Today’s announcements show what we have already achieved and demonstrate our firm commitments for the future to make significant reductions in plastic use.”
