It is suggested that around 3 million tonnes of food waste are produced annually by the UK hospitality and food service sector and the cost of food waste to the UK hospitality sector is estimated to be around £2.5 billion per year.

  • Food manufacturers reduced their food waste by 350,000 tonnes between 2011 and 2018, a drop of 21%. Retail food waste dropped by 5% over the same period.
  • 40% of food waste in the hospitality industry is in the form of a carbohydrate with around 20% is potatoes, 13% is bread, and 7% is other items like rice & pasta.
  • Food waste can occur at various stages of the supply chain, including during production, distribution, and retail. The most common reasons for food waste are overproduction, damaged packaging, manufacturing or order mistakes, stock control issues, and cosmetic standards.
  • The UK government are in consultation to address food waste in businesses. For example, WRAP has set voluntary targets for businesses to reduce food waste which could become mandatory in the future.
